Football - Ince tips Phillips for the top

Blackpool boss Paul Ince believes the Premier League is within striking distance for winger Matt Phillips.

Scotland international Phillips has endured a challenging season this term after Southampton's efforts to take him to the top flight fell short during the summer.

A troublesome toe injury sidelined the 22-year-old for nine weeks, but he has started to show his best form in recent weeks, firing a late winner as the 10-man Seasiders overcame former boss Ian Holloway and Crystal Palace last time out at Bloomfield Road.

And Ince, a former England, Manchester United and Inter Milan midfielder, finds himself marvelling at Phillips' shooting ability.

"Matty Phillips will be a Premier League player one day, I believe that," he told the Blackpool Gazette.

"He has all the assets to be a top Premier League player. I've never seen a player strike the ball as well as he does.

"I think a confident Matty Phillips will play in the Premier League. And he's getting there."
