Football - Laws curses missed opportunity

Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws admitted his side's goalless draw at Bristol Rovers was "a missed opportunity."

Depleted Rovers, already missing 10 players through injury, saw their ranks depleted further when skipper and central defender Tom Parkes was stretchered off in the first half after beingknocked unconscious in a tussle with striker Deon Burton.

The visitors had the better chances, twice hitting the woodwork, and were also thwarted by a goal-line clearance by Rovers defender Michael Smith and Laws thinks they should have made the most of the Pirates' problems.

"Given Bristol Rovers' injury problems, I think we'll look back and kick ourselves that we didn't take advantage of their situation," said Laws.

"There won't be many better opportunities to come here and get three points and we had the chances to do that. I couldn't fault our effort, only our finishing.

"But we have opened the season with three clean sheets and that, at least, has given us a base to build on because it's been a solid start.

"Credit to Bristol Rovers because their manager John Ward is having to play a lot of youngsters at the moment, but they dug in and made things very difficult for us."
