Football - Marshall eyes U21 recall

Ben Marshall hopes Leicester's npower Championship promotion challenge will see him force his way back into the England Under-21 squad.

Marshall made his debut for the Young Lions in September, coming on as a substitute during the 2-0 win in Azerbaijan which saw Stuart Pearce's side qualify for this summer's European Championship in Israel.

He then played the full 90 minutes a few days later as a 1-0 victory over Norway at Chesterfield's Proact Stadium confirmed England would win their qualifying group.

The winger has not been in subsequent squads but he has his fingers crossed he will be able to impress Pearce again if Leicester, who have surged up to second in the table on the back of five straight wins, maintain their push towards the Barclays Premier League.

"It was brilliant to get the call up in September," Marshall told Press Association Sport. "Making my debut was brilliant and then to get a full 90 minutes was a real achievement, I was really pleased.

"Obviously coming to Leicester helped me get recognised, it's thanks to them I got the call up really. So, hopefully, if I continue to play well for Leicester and we continue to stay towards the top of the table, then I can catch the eye again.

"It's everyone's dream to play for England when you're growing up and of course I want to try to get back into that squad but I know there's some great players out there. But, hopefully, if I just concentrate on Leicester then that will take care of itself."

Marshall, who joined the Foxes from Stoke at the end of the January transfer window in 2012, added: "Leicester is the priority because they took a chance with me when they signed me and I am really thankful for that.

"We have put a good run together at a good time and there's a buzz around the place. We're right up there and it's important we stay there now because this club deserves to be back in the Premier League and that's where all the players want to be."
