Football - McCarthy rescues Latics

QPR equalled an unwanted record as they had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Wigan that made it 16 games without a victory.

Not since Sheffield United in the 1990/91 season had a team gone so many top-flight games into a campaign without breaking their duck.

James McCarthy gave Wigan the lead in the 19th minute before Ryan Nelsen levelled seven minutes later.

Substitute Djibril Cisse put Rangers ahead with 19 minutes remaining but McCarthy netted again three minutes later.

The visitors began the brighter side, with Ali Al Habsi punching away a Shaun Wright-Phillips cross-shot.

Wigan had their first chance in the 18th minute. Jordi Gomez tapped a free-kick to David Jones, who sent in a volley that Rob Green tipped over. The corner was cleared but Jean Beausejour's second delivery fell to McCarthy and he drilled a volley into the bottom corner.

The lead lasted only seven minutes. Nelsen attacked Adel Taarabt's corner and although Al Habsi got a hand to the ball he could not keep it out.

Rangers really should have gone ahead in the 68th minute. Jamie Mackie teed up Stephane Mbia on the edge of the box but he shinned his shot and Al Habsi saved.

Careless defending from Wigan ensured they got another chance three minutes later, though, as Wright-Phillips was given space down the left to pick out Cisse, who slid the ball beyond Al Habsi's reach.

Wigan were level again just three minutes later. Beausejour picked out McCarthy in the middle, who poked his shot into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Bell steers England to victory, hosts take 2-1 Ashes lead

Ian Bell guided England to an eight-wicket victory over Australia in the third test at Edgbaston on Friday to put the hosts 2-1 up in the series with two matches to play. Bell (65 not out) and Joe Root, with an unbeaten 38, anchored the chase after England were set to 121 to win on the third day at Edgbaston where a dominant performance banished memories of a heavy defeat at Lord's. England lost Alastair Cook (7) and Adam Lyth (12) to set a few nerves on edge but Bell, dropped on 20 by Australia captain Michael Clarke, made his second 50 of the match to spark raucous celebrations after Root hit the winning runs. No snow no problem as China's financial might lands 2022 Games

The snow will be fake, but the very real financial muscle China boasts proved decisive on Friday when Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Games officials meeting in Kuala Lumpur voted for the Chinese capital over the lure of a winter wonderland offering from Kazakhstan's Almaty, in a clear sign that the International Olympic Committee is craving solidity and security after a series of problems and headaches. While Rio scrambles to make up lost time in its building for the 2016 Olympics, and Tokyo is embroiled in a stadium drama the allure of a megacity with a cast-iron financial guarantee proved irresistible.
