Football - McInnes backs Brown to revive Dundee

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes admitted he felt for former Rangers team-mate John Brown after his Dundee side were relegated from the Clydesdale Bank Premier League but insists Brown is the man to help the club rise again.

The Dark Blues needed to beat the Dons at Dens Park on Sunday but their 1-1 draw means they drop out of the top-flight after just one season.

Brown's men had looked to be on course for victory after Jim McAlister's deflected first-half strike and a straight red card for Reds striker Rory Fallon for an off-the-ball kick at Declan Gallagher had put them in command.

But their attempt at a remarkable escape act, which had already seen them twice postpone demotion by beating St Mirren and then Hearts, was finally snuffed out when Aberdeen midfielder Peter Pawlett took a tumble in the box to earn the visitors a 69th-minute penalty.

Niall McGinn rammed the spot-kick home but replays appeared to show that Pawlett had gone over easily as he was challenged by Lewis Toshney.

McInnes said: "It was not today that has cost Dundee. Bomber and his players can take a lot of pride from what they have done over the last few weeks.

"Dundee are in good hands, there is no question about that.

"When you see what Bomber and his players have put into it, there is a feeling of sympathy for that. But he's been in the game longer than me and knows what it will take to get back.

"After the game I shook his hands and just said 'unlucky'. I know how he will be hurting. There's not a lot you can say."

Bell steers England to victory, hosts take 2-1 Ashes lead

Ian Bell guided England to an eight-wicket victory over Australia in the third test at Edgbaston on Friday to put the hosts 2-1 up in the series with two matches to play. Bell (65 not out) and Joe Root, with an unbeaten 38, anchored the chase after England were set to 121 to win on the third day at Edgbaston where a dominant performance banished memories of a heavy defeat at Lord's. England lost Alastair Cook (7) and Adam Lyth (12) to set a few nerves on edge but Bell, dropped on 20 by Australia captain Michael Clarke, made his second 50 of the match to spark raucous celebrations after Root hit the winning runs. No snow no problem as China's financial might lands 2022 Games

The snow will be fake, but the very real financial muscle China boasts proved decisive on Friday when Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Games officials meeting in Kuala Lumpur voted for the Chinese capital over the lure of a winter wonderland offering from Kazakhstan's Almaty, in a clear sign that the International Olympic Committee is craving solidity and security after a series of problems and headaches. While Rio scrambles to make up lost time in its building for the 2016 Olympics, and Tokyo is embroiled in a stadium drama the allure of a megacity with a cast-iron financial guarantee proved irresistible.
