Spanish striker Novo, who scored 71 goals during a six-year spell with Rangers, is hoping to be eligible for Carlisle's league game at Crawley on Saturday after signing a short-term deal until the end of the season.
"He gives us a know-how and composure that I'm hoping will rub off on other players," said Kavanagh after watching his side secure their third win in 10 league games at Brunton Park on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory against Bradford.
"I hope it is one that will excite the fans. He's had a very good career and it's another option for us."
Novo was signed by Rangers from Dundee in a B£450,000 deal in the summer of 2004 and made over 230 appearances for the Ibrox club before moving back to Spain with Sporting Gijon in 2010.
The 34-year-old returned to Scotland when joining Morton in October, but was released by the Scottish Championship side in December. He could make his debut for the Cumbrians this weekend, subject to international clearance.
