Football - Poke backed to shine

Torquay goalkeeper Michael Poke has the potential to follow predecessor Bobby Olejnik to the npower Championship, according to goalkeeping coach Kenny Veysey.

The 27-year-old, back for a second spell at Plainmoor, has cemented his position as the Gulls' number one having replaced Olejnik following his move to Peterborough.

And Veysey says it has been obvious for years that Poke could make the step up to a higher level.

"Even back in the Conference days, I always thought that Michael had the ability to play in the Championship," he told the Western Morning News.

"He's just had a bit of bad luck in recent years, first with injury and then a move to Brighton that didn't really pay off.

"He needed a couple of full seasons and once he gets that under his belt I think you will see even bigger improvements."
