Football - Reds targeting "right type"

Barnsley's management team are confident of retaining most of their players this summer before adding a certain type of character to their squad.

Boss David Flitcroft, assistant Micky Mellon and coach Martin Scott, who all signed new one-year rolling contracts last week, want to transform the Reds, perennial relegation battlers, into a force in the npower Championship.

"We feel that if we keep what we had last season, anyone coming into the group will be coming into one full of established, good Championship footballers," Mellon told Press Association Sport.

"First and foremost we have more than a good nucleus of good Championship players here and we want to make sure we bring in players who fit into that dressing room.

"That's very important. They have to be the right type of character and have the will to want to get better every day.

"We won't be bringing in anyone who doesn't want to come in on a morning and want to get better and leave thinking they haven't got any better.

"That doesn't turn us on to want to work with them. We want players who are ambitious, who want to work hard and integrate into the group and add something to the group.

"We won't have any loafers or freeloaders. We want to carry on and add to the good work that the current players have done for us."
