Football - Rosler ponders Nicholls loan

Wigan goalkeeper Lee Nicholls could be sent out on loan at the end of the month, providing Uwe Rosler has all four of his stoppers back fit.

With Ali Al-Habsi and Scott Carson both carrying injuries earlier in the season, the 21-year-old was the Latics' first-choice keeper for eight successive games in both the Sky Bet Championship and Europa League when Owen Coyle was manager.

Although he kept three clean sheets in that time, he was also culpable for a late Zulte Waregem goal which contributed towards Wigan's exit from continental competition and he has not played for the club since December 1, which was Coyle's last match in charge.

Al-Habsi has been in impressive form since he returned from a knee injury, keeping four successive clean sheets in the league, but Carson is now sidelined with a thigh injury while the experienced Mike Pollitt provides Rosler with another option.

Should Carson recover from his thigh injury this month, Nicholls could be jettisoned out on loan to garner more experience, just as he did during a spell with Northampton last season.

"When we are in the last week of January, when they are fit, then we will look into it," said Rosler.

"Now the Europa League games are not there any more we have hopefully the FA Cup and the league until the rest of the season and that allows us to probably let one out on loan.

"That will be most likely Lee Nicholls to get experience, to get first-team football for his development. But we are not there now because we have injuries and we have players not available."
