The French had few problems in progressing to a quarter-final against Uzbekistan, who overcame Greece 3-1.

Geoffrey Kondogbia opened the scoring after latching on to a Sanogo header, and Jean Christophe Bahebeck doubled the advantage before the break.

Sanogo scored the third midway through the second half with a composed finish, while Jordan Vertout made it four before Sinan Bakis' consolation strike.

Uzbekistan scored two second-half penalties to get past Greece in a game which saw a pair of red cards and three penalties.

A second quarter-final was determined as Spain, 2-1 winners over Mexico, set up a showdown against Uruguay, who defeated Nigeria by the same score.

The Spaniards were down within two minutes courtesy of a sumptuous volley from Arturo Gonzalez, but held on to level through Derik and then win in the 90th minute courtesy of Jese.

Uruguay were also indebted to a late winner, with Nicolas Lopez scoring an 84-minute winner from the penalty spot against 10-man Nigeria.
