A statement from Spurs read: "We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Eric Dier, subject to a medical."

The 20-year-old, born in Cheltenham, moved to Portugal at the age of ten and subsequently joined the youth ranks at Sporting Lisbon.

Having spent a number of years working his way through the Portuguese side's academy, Dier, who can play as a defender or a defensive midfielder, broke into the first team as a 19-year-old and has since attracted much attention from a number of top clubs throughout Europe.

It was reported that Newcastle and West Ham were interested in acquiring the youngster's signature, but it is Tottenham that have won the race and the London club are expected to wrap up the signing in the coming days.

Dier spent time on loan at Everton as a schoolboy, and has clearly retained a long-term hope of returning to the land of his birth. A tall, strong centre-half with the ball skills you'd expect from a Sporting Lisbon player, he is an intelligent, level-headed young man who hopefully combines the best of both worlds.

However, he was not a regular at Sporting and - while £4m is relatively cheap for an English player - eyebrows will be raised in Portugal as he is seen as being far from the finished product. But given the 'English premium' charged for local talent, it is a decent deal for both sides.
