Football - Stanley boss sensed victory

Accrington manager James Beattie felt his side could have snatched victory after taking the lead against Southend only to be pegged back in a 1-1 draw.

Mark Phillips' own goal was cancelled out by Luke Prosser's 78th-minute equaliser but Accrington goalkeeper Andrew Dawber was man of the match as Southend squandered a number of decent chances.

"We could have got all three points. It shows how far we have come though in that we are disappointed not to have taken all three points against a good team," Beattie said.

"We gave a good account of ourselves and just a lapse in concentration cost us as we left their centre-half unmarked from a corner.

"We defended stoutly and young Andrew Dawber has done well, making some good saves and he has stepped up to the plate.

"We are all hungry and I believe in the players, we have a great set of lads with fantastic ability and we are developing as a team. I don't believe we have anything to fear in this league."
