Football - Torres ready for challenge of new blue

Rafael Benitez has insisted Fernando Torres is fully behind Chelsea's bid to sign a new striker and "ready to fight for his position".

The Blues will attempt to bring in another forward in the January transfer window to provide both cover and competition for Torres, who is finally showing signs of justifying his £50million price tag.

It has taken the 28-year-old nearly two years and an almost uninterrupted run in the side to get to this point, having spent the first 18 months of his Stamford Bridge career languishing in the shadow of Didier Drogba.

Torres admitted earlier this season he would not want to go through that again, meaning he could be forgiven for opposing anything that would risk a repeat.

But interim manager Benitez claimed that far from being against Chelsea reinforcing their attack next month, Torres was all for it.

"He knows that we need this competition, we know that we need this competition," Benitez said.

"The problem in January always is, 'Which one?'. Which player is available, which player is good enough to be here in a top side?

"So, it's not easy, but I think it will be positive for everyone.

"And Fernando is ready to fight for his position. He has no problem because he has a lot of confidence and he is enjoying now his football."
