Football - Williamson wants shirt for keeps

Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has warned captain Fabricio Coloccini not to expect him to stand aside as he prepares to return to action.

PA Sport Report

The 30-year-old former Portsmouth man has played a key role in the Magpies' dramatic improvement in recent weeks with Coloccini sidelined by a groin injury.

Alan Pardew's men have beaten Chelsea and Tottenham in their last two Barclays Premier League games without their inspirational skipper, who was an unused substitute at White Hart Lane and will hope to resume when Norwich head for St James' Park at the weekend.

But Williamson told the Northern Echo: "The manager has openly said he is going to keep a winning team. That can only carry on and is a good thing.

"Colo is a fantastic player, a great leader and club captain. It is nice to be playing, but it can all change week to week and I'm sure he will be back at some stage.

"I have to make sure I stay in there."
