Football - Wright hails duo

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright hailed goalscorers Nigel Hasselbaink and Stevie May following the 2-0 win at Hearts.

Hasselbaink headed the opener following Chris Millar's deflected pass in the 28th minute and May curled home in the 53rd minute following a spell of intense pressure.

May's goal was his ninth of the season and Hasselbaink has now scored in three games out of four - and Wright is delighted with the way they have combined after losing Steven MacLean to a knee injury.

Wright said of the Dutchman: "He is disappointed he didn't score on Wednesday (in the League Cup win at Morton) because I don't think he has scored three in a row. It's a nice wee partnership and Nigel is a handful.

"When you get the ball into his feet in that last third, defenders are wary of him. He has really good feet and good body strength as well, and for him to get a header...

"Actually he should have scored another one from a header after that.

"So I'm really pleased with Nigel. It's a partnership that has blossomed over the last couple of games."

The strike pairing may continue in the coming weeks after MacLean experienced a failed return to full training on Friday, less than two weeks after fearing he had suffered cruciate ligament damage at St Mirren Park.

"Until he trained yesterday he was close," Wright said. "But he has got to go and see a specialist on Monday again."
