Former Bellator Champ Alexander Shlemenko Fighting Drug Test Failure
Former Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko intends to fight California State Athletic Commission charges that he failed his Bellator 133 post-fight drug test on Feb. 13 in Fresno, Calif.
Reports citing anonymous sources indicated that Shlemenko failed due to his test showing an unacceptably high ratio of testosterone-to-epitestosterone, which is generally indicative of exogenous testosterone use.

CSAC executive director Andy Foster confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that Shlemenko violated the commission’s banned substance list, but did not reveal the full nature of the violation. He said that Shlemenko had been indefinitely suspended and fined $2,500, the maximum penalty currently allowed by California’s regulations. He also added that Shlemenko’s knockout victory over Melvin Manhoef would be changed to a no contest.
Shlemenko, however, has retained the services of noted attorney Howard Jacobs, who issued the following statement this week:
Alexander Shlemenko denies the use of any banned substances, and looks forward to clearing his name at the next meeting of the California State Athletic Commission with his lawyer Howard Jacobs. His representatives have requested and are still awaiting the complete laboratory documentation package from the CSAC, given the extremely unusual and questionable findings that have been initially reported. The document request that has been made is consistent with the types of documents that the testing laboratory used in this case routinely provides — without the necessity for such a request — in cases involving the United States Anti-Doping Agency. It is impossible for Mr. Shlemenko to properly respond to these charges until he is provided with this basic documentation, and it is hoped that CSAC will not withhold such basic documentation.
With his camp's request for further documentation, Shlemenko does not currently have a hearing date set to challenge the findings.
