A FORMER England star says Albion may be one signing away from European football qualification.

Brighton and Hove Albion secured their highest ever Premier League finish following a 3-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday.

Second half goals from Joel Veltman, Pascal Gross and Danny Welbeck were enough to cancel out Michail Antonio's opener.

The win meant Graham Potter’s side finished the campaign in ninth place with 51 points – just five points behind West Ham who qualified for next season's Europa Conference League.

Former England international and Arsenal striker Ian Wright said if Brighton were able to take their chances, they could’ve finished even higher up the table.

On BBC’s Match of the Day, Gary Lineker said: “An excellent season for Brighton. They finished ninth, only lost one of their last ten games and they play lovely football to boot. Graham Potter is doing an excellent job."

Ian Wright replied: "Brilliant owner, brilliant manager, fantastically run club. When you consider the amount of chances they do miss and they finish ninth, once they get that player to take those chances they are going to create problems.

“That's all they need. If they can get that guy who can take that half chance, honestly. They finished ninth now, what are they going to do when they get that? European places?"

Albion scored 42 goals in the Premier League this season and conceded 44.

Top scorers Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard netted just eight times.
