New Derry boss Paddy Tally has pulled off a major coup by landing leading strength and conditioning coach Cairbre Ó Cairealláin.

Ó Cairealláin has been a key cog in the backroom teams of two All-Ireland winning hurling sides - Liam Sheedy’s Tipperary and John Kiely’s Limerick.

The former Antrim hurler revealed in an interview that he was working full time with the Limerick senior hurling squad.

It will be interesting to see if he takes up a similar role with the Derry senior squad.

Ó Cairealláin will join a backroom team that includes Paul McIver (Head Coach) and former Derry players Paul McFlynn and Kevin McGuckin.

He previously worked with the Arsenal ladies side and has gone on to forge a big reputation for himself.

A native of St Paul’s in West Belfast, Ó Cairealláin played Minor and U21 hurling with Antrim and is the brother of Naoise Ó Cairealláin, otherwise known as Moglai Bap from the Irish language rap trio Kneecap.

Tally left his role as Kerry’s performance coach to take over as Derry manager earlier this mouth following a protracted four-month search to find a replacement for Mickey Harte.

With no pre-season competitions in 2025, Tally is set to begin in Derry tenure with a clash against his native county Tyrone on Sunday, January 26 at O’Neills Healy Park.

Tally will have to plan without Derry’s 2022 Ulster-winning captain after Chrissy McKaigue confirmed his retirement from inter-county football last week.
