Former Liverpool defender Luis Enrique has told the Reds to sign Norwich City defender Max Aarons to rival Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alexander-Arnold has been one of Liverpool’s most important players over the past few seasons. Indeed, since he has been in the first-team, the Reds have won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

The right-back has been a crucial member of the side’s that have won each of those titles.

While his defensive abilities come under question at times, Liverpool depend on his attacking prowess. Alexander-Arnold has contributed to 74 goals in 226 senior games at Liverpool.

The Englishman has been within the top two assisters in the Premier League in two of the past three seasons.

Indeed, he is clearly one of the league’s most valuable assets. However, former Reds man Enrique feels that the side should sign a player to give Alexander-Arnold some competition.

“Trent will start so we need a younger player to put Trent on his toes,” he said via Liverpool Echo.

“Max Aarons from Norwich would be a good player to have.”

Aarons has shown glimpses of his quality in the Premier League. The 22-year-old has provided two assists in each of his last two seasons in the top flight.

However, Norwich have failed to stay afloat in the Premier League for each of those seasons. As such, he could benefit from a move to a bigger side, even to fulfil a lesser role.

Enrique also likened Aarons to a current Liverpool star, Kostas Tsimikas.

“He’s not the quality of Trent but he’s a bit like Tsimikas with a similar style,” he added.

Tsimikas joined Liverpool in 2020, and appeared sparingly in his first season. In the season just gone, he was utilised as a backup for Andy Robertson, and acquitted himself well, providing six assists in 26 games.

Should Aarons join, fulfilling the same role at right-back could benefit Liverpool. At present, their options behind Alexander-Arnold are James Milner and Joe Gomez, neither of whom are natural right-backs.

Indeed, Aarons would add quality to the side in the absence of the Alexander-Arnold, and Liverpool would keep some attacking threat.

At just 22, Aarons is sure to progress over the next couple of years, and could even rival the star for a starting spot down the line. As such, the potential signing sounds like a good idea, and is one Liverpool should perhaps look into.
