Former Premier League struggler brutally called out by manager for what he lacks compared to teammates

New Besiktas boss Senol Gunes has called out Everton loanee Dele Alli for one thing that he lacks, that has been no problem for his teammates.

The last few years of Alli’s career have not gone according to plan. That has come as a surprise after the midfielder started his journey to becoming a star on the right foot.

Indeed, after making the jump from League One MK Dons to Tottenham, he impressed immediately.

During his first season in the top flight, Alli notched 10 goals, as well as registering five assists. The next season saw him blow those numbers out of the water.

The Englishman scored 18 Premier League goals and provide nine assists to his teammates. Over the next few seasons, though, his productivity began to slow.

In the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons for Spurs, Alli scored just a single Premier League goal, as well as making only one assist.

He was shipped out to Everton after becoming a fringe player in north London, and had very little success with the Toffees.

Indeed, in 13 appearances for the side in more than six months, he was not involved in a single goal. He was loaned out to Besiktas over the summer, where he is currently playing.

While the loan switch represented an opportunity to regain some form, it seems it is not going to plan.

Besiktas boss slams Dele Alli

In seven appearances for the Turkish side, Alli has scored one goal, in his second game. He has missed just two games – for which he was injured – and has started the other seven that he has been available for.

Beskitas have recently changed managers, reappointing former boss Gunes. While the manager has managed to break through to most players in his short time, he has slammed Alli for not being up to the same standard.

“I couldn’t affect the players [yet], now I can easily get through to them, but we haven’t got through to Dele Alli yet,” Gunes said, quoted by the Daily Mail.

“Let’s not discuss Dele Alli as a player, but he is below expectations in terms of efficiency.”

Indeed, Alli seems to have fallen a long way from his prime at Tottenham. He will hope that he can get on side with his new manager, or risk losing out on game time.

That would be a grim situation, given he has only just made the loan switch to Besiktas.

Alli needs to turn things around

Should Alli not manage to perform at Besiktas, it seems unlikely that he will have much luck back in England. Indeed, there is clearly a reason Frank Lampard shipped him out after such little time at Everton.

Given Besiktas have played him at every opportunity so far, he should have some time to turn things around. Given he is still just 26, he should be able to find some form.

However, if the new boss does not like what he sees before long, it could spell trouble.

Alli will want to have at least some impact at the club before he departs. Should he get sent back from his loan early, his career might never recover.
