Former Saints WR Robert Meachem attempting comeback at 32

Former Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem is 32 and has been out of the NFL since 2014, but he feels he can still play in the NFL.

Robert Meachem, who's been out of the NFL since 2014, isserious about making a comeback to the NFL at age 32.

How serious is he? Theformer Saintswide receiver participated in Pro Day on Friday at his alma mater, Tennessee.

"You play eight years in the league and come back (for a Pro Day),'' Meachem told the Knoxville News. "I don't know if that's ever been done.''

Meachem who spent all but one of his NFL seasons in New Orleans, played a vital role on theSaints' Super Bowl-winning team. He caught 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns in that 2009 season. But that was more than seven years ago, an eternity in the NFL, especially for a wide receiver.

Meachem said that he's had a couple of workouts with NFL teams the past two seasons, but nothing worked out.

"I ain't 22 years old any more but I can still run,'' Meachem said. "I can still play.''

Scouts clocked Meachem at 4.59 seconds in the 40-yard dash Friday, a bit off his pace (4.39 seconds) from his Volunteers Pro Day 10 years ago, but still respectable. For some perspective, former Louisville wideoutJames Quick, aprojected mid-round pick in the upcoming draft, ran a 4.60 40 at the recent NFL Scouting Combine.

Meachem's life since leavingthe NFL hasn't been easy. He told the News a former associate bilked him out of a "large amount of money." And he was briefly jailed this year for owing his ex-wife almost $400,000 in child support.

But he says his two daughters are taken care ofand are drivinghis comeback; they say they want to see him play on TV.

"I think I have three or four years left in me,'' Meachemsaid. "I haven't taken as many licks as everybody else the last two years.''
