Former UFC Champ Carla Esparza Out for 6-8 Weeks, Surgery on Tap

Former UFC women's strawweight champion Carla Esparza will be out of action for six to eight weeks with surgery on tap. Esparza confirmed the news on Twitter on Monday night following an initial report by Fox Sports.

“I will be undergoing surgery as a result of a shoulder injury from my last fight. I will be out 6-8 months,” she wrote.

As she said, Esparza injured the shoulder in her fight with current champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Esparza held the belt heading into that fight, but lost via TKO stoppage late in the second round.

Her manager, Brian Butler of Suckerpunch Entertainment, told Fox Sports that Esparza initially thought she might be able to rest and rehab the injury. As time went by, the shoulder didn't get better and it was determined that she would need surgery – and six to eight weeks of out action – to properly heal.

Esparza is currently on vacation with her family, but will have surgery upon her return.

She is currently ranked as the No. 1 strawweight contender with an over record of 10-3.
