Former UFC Fighter Diego Brandao Suspended by Nevada Commission in Addition to USADA

The Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday issued former UFC featherweight Diego Brandao a nine-month suspension and fined him 30 percent of his UFC 195 fight purse, or $10,800, for testing positive to marijuana. The test was conducted by the United States Anti-Doping Agency as the administrator of the UFC's Anti-Doping Policy.

Brandao's nine-month suspension is retroactive to Jan. 2, the date of the sample collection and his UFC 195 bout with Brian Ortega. That would make Brandao eligible to apply for a new license on Oct. 2. Prior to receiving a new license, Brandao would have to provide clean drug test results as required by the NAC.

The result of the fight was not changed, as Ortega submitted Brandao via triangle choke in the third round.

USADA had also previously suspended Brandao for nine months, but the two suspensions will run concurrently.

Brandao was released from his UFC contract following a felony arrest on April 15 in Albuquerque, N.M. The arrest stems from an incident at a local strip club, where Brandao was charged with aggravated battery and three counts of aggravated assault in an encounter with the club’s staff, which included Brandao admittedly brandishing a weapon.

During his four-year UFC tenure, Brandao won the featherweight competition on Season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter and amassed a 6-4 record in the Octagon. His overall professional record stands at 20-11.
