FORMER Wanderers full-back Liam Gordon has joined League Two side Walsall on a two-year deal.

Gordon made 21 appearances for the Whites last season and was one of eight players released at the end of their contracts.

The 23-year-old is excited for get started at the Bescot Stadium and feels he is a good fit for the Saddlers.

“I’m delighted,” he told the club’s website. “I’ve been speaking to the head coach and I know what his expectations are, what he wants from me and I’m excited for the club’s future and his plans for the club going forward.

“I spoke to the gaffer about his formation and that completely suits me.

“I’m an attacking left-back, I like to get forward, I like to contribute with goals and assists but I’ve got to help with the defensive side as well.

"I’m definitely looking forward to the new challenge.”

Walsall finished 16th in League Two last season under Michael Flynn, who replaced former Wanderers midfielder Matt Taylor in the hotseat.

Flynn added: “I’m delighted to add Liam to the squad. He’s got good experience of a winning team from his time at Bolton.

“He’s fit, quick, a good crosser of the ball, athletic and fits everything that I want in a wing-back. He’s hungry to stamp down a place in the team and to take us forward.”

Gordon joined Wanderers in 2020 but failed to nail down a place in the side and was loaned out to former employers Dagenham.

But the Guyana international showed promising signs at times last season, providing competition for Declan John at left-back and even slotting in on the right of defence at one stage.

Earlier this month, he told The Bolton News: “I spoke to the gaffer after our meeting and he said this move is important for me – it isn’t just about getting a club near to London to be near family.

“I’m going on 23 now and I think this will be one of the most important decisions I make. I want to push up that league ladder and build on what I did with Bolton.

“The experience I had there means I can make a good choice. It has to be the right move for me in a lot of different ways.”
