Scotland boss Craig Levein has handed Richard Foster a late call-up to the squad to face Slovenia on Wednesday night, the Scottish Football Association have confirmed.

The Bristol City defender replaces Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton who suffered a hamstring injury. Foster, 26, is the second addition to Levein's original squad for the game in Koper.

Celtic skipper Scott Brown called off with a groin injury on Sunday followed by Blackpool winger Matt Phillips (hamstring) and Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley (suspected tear in his calf) with Wigan midfielder James McArthur added.

Gary Caldwell will captain Scotland in the continued absence of Darren Fletcher as striker Kenny Miller will not start the game. Craig Mackail-Smith will play up front while McArthur comes straight into the starting line-up.

Coach Kenny Black said: "The manager named the team this morning. We've got Charlie Mulgrew coming in. Gary Caldwell will be captain. He's getting close to his 50th cap so I'm sure Gary will be very, very proud to be captain."

Mulgrew will win his first cap after impressing in recent months and captaining Celtic in Brown's absence.

Black added: "Charlie's form has been really good at Celtic over a number of weeks now. With Phil Bardsley being one of the ones who has had to drop out through injury, it's given Charlie an opportunity to come in and stake a claim."

Miller will not start after Cardiff manager Malky Mackay asked Levein to use the 32-year-old sparingly following their Carling Cup final shootout defeat by Liverpool.

"Kenny will be on the bench but the manager has named a team that will be very, very competitive from the first whistle," Black said. "There will be an opportunity for lads to maybe get part of the game.

"Kenny is desperate to play but you saw the game on Sunday, the cup final, and we just felt it would be better having Kenny as back-up. Craig Mackail-Smith will play up front."
