FPL tips: Transfers, deadline, captain and scout options for Fantasy Premier League GW3

Fantasy Premier League returns for gameweek 3 as managers begin to get their feet under the table of the new season.

There have already been plenty of twists and turns as the likes of Mohamed Salah and Gabriel Jesus combine surprising blanks with big scores in the early matchdays.

This week’s deadline is set for 11am on Saturday, August 20 ahead of Tottenham hosting Wolves.

Arsenal go to Bournemouth later that day before Manchester City’s trip to Newcastle headlines the Sunday action. On Monday, there is the small matter of Manchester United hosting Liverpool.

Here are our FPL tips for GW3...

Gabriel Martinelli - Arsenal - £6.3m

Perhaps cursed as the most popular transfer in of the gameweek, Martinelli is a good shout for both selection and being your captain. He’s cheap, guaranteed to start, away to a newly-promoted team, part of a team scoring plenty of goals, and already has a couple himself this season. What could possibly go wrong?

Dejan Kulusevski - Tottenham - £8.1m

After a chunky price rise for the new season, plus Spurs signing Richarlison, last year’s FPL golden boy Kulusevski dropped off the radar a touch. However, a fine GW1 outing and the visit of a suspect Wolves side this weekend make him worth the extra cash. Talking of Spurs, it may just be time to back Ivan Perisic - if you are confident that Antonio Conte will drop Ryan Sessegnon...

James Maddison - Leicester - £8m

Fly under the radar this week by picking Leicester attackers against a Southampton side they have only lost to once in their last six meetings. Maddison has scored in three of the last four of those games, and already has both a goal and an assist this year.

Joao Cancelo - Manchester City - £7m

The battle of two teams yet to concede a goal at St James’ Park comes as Cancelo shows the sort of form that made him an FPL must-buy during the first half of last season. One assist, two clean sheets and four bonus points make him the second-highest scoring defender so far.

Danny Welbeck - Brighton - £6.5m

Brighton go to West Ham on Sunday looking very much like the team that excelled in almost every department last season - unlike the Hammers. Of course, the department they are yet to master is goals but Welbeck is leading the line well and should suit an away day at an underperforming West Ham team. Fun fact: the striker has never lost a Premier League game against the Hammers when not wearing a Watford shirt - in 14 meetings!
