Frank Lampard once estimated that Chelsea transfer target Dominic Calvert-Lewin was worth up to £80million to Everton.

The footballing legend-turned-manager worked with the 27-year-old at Everton between 2022 and 2023, and in a season where the Merseysiders narrowly survived relegation to the Championship by just two points.

Despite Calvert-Lewin being plagued by injury that season – a knee-injury sidelined him for 60 days while recurring hamstring injuries kept him out of action for a further 17 games – Lampard valued the star striker incredibly highly.

Speaking about the striker, who has been a staple part of Everton's side since 2016, Lampard admitted in 2022: "I don’t think you can look away from the fact of what a £60million, £70m, £80m striker can do for you.

"The impact he can have on confidence and the team and what he offers is a huge deal. I don’t want to look too far ahead but if we can keep him fit that will be a positive."

Chelsea have spent big during the summer's transfer window in a bid to bolster their team which only could only muster a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

New manager Enzo Maresca has recruited 10 fresh faces thus far - including marquee signings like Pedro Neto from Wolves in a £54million deal and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City for £30million - but the west London side are still eager to bolster their strike force.

Chelsea have been eyeing-up Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen, but a transfer appears to have broken down due to his reported £500,000-per-week wage demands – leaving the Blues considering other options up top. And one name in the conversation is Calvert-Lewin, who on his day could score goals for fun in west London at a more reasonable price.

However, Lampard's estimations of Calvert-Lewin's worth two years ago are a far cry from what Everton are asking for their forward in 2024. Back in June, it was reported that Everton would take as little as £37million this summer for their proven goalscorer – and the Toffees may take a cheaper offer this late in the window with his contract set to expire at the end of next June.

Newcastle United came close to securing Calvert-Lewin's services earlier in the window, but a deal ultimately fell through due to personal terms. The Magpies could yet come back into the mix to acquire Calvert-Lewin's services before Friday's deadline, though.

Should Chelsea hope to get Calvert-Lewin through the doors of Stamford Bridge, they may want to work quickly on a deal with Everton.
