Chelsea icon Frank Lampard joked about signing Joao Felix after his appointment as Coventry City manager. The former midfielder returned to the managerial hotseat for the first time since his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge after Graham Potter's sacking in April 2023.

He succeeds Mark Robins at the CBS Arena after he was relieved of his duties following seven-and-a-half years in charge. The move sees Lampard return to the Championship after a successful spell with Derby County when he led the Rams to the play-off final.

Coventry sit just two points clear of the relegation zone, in 17th. Lampard faces an important first game in charge as they host fellow strugglers Cardiff City, who are one point clear of the bottom four and one place outside the relegation zone.

The Blues legend addressed the media for the first time since his appointment on Thursday and he was already asked about the prospect of additions in January. The 46-year-old detailed whether he would utilise his contacts at Stamford Bridge in order to help bolster his Coventry ranks with some Blues talents.

However, the former midfielder joked about who he could sign, name-dropping Joao Felix - who made a permanent move to the capital for a fee in the region of £45million in the summer.

"Yeah but who are we going to bring in from Chelsea? Joao Felix or something?," the newly appointed Coventry boss said.

"It's not that simple and I see your point, I've had good experiences with youngsters from Chelsea but some periods are different than others.

"If a player comes, he has to affect us in a positive way so there is work to be done. We have had some conversations but it's not my priority, we've got enough gametime and the quality in this squad is strong enough in the meantime to really get to work with what we've got.

"When January comes, we will have conversations but it's certainly not been anywhere top of the list in our conversations."
