Follow live updates from the French Open as the third round gets underway on another packed day at Roland Garros. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic remain on a collision course and are still yet to drop a set as they both secured safe passage to the fourth round. Djokovic was on imperious form as he dismissed Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 before Nadal claimed he played his “best match” of the tournament so far in defeating Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Coco Gauff continued her impressive form as the American dismissed Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-4. The 18-year-old is looking to take advantage of an open bottom half of the bracket, as is the US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez after she battled past Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 on Philippe Chatrier. Former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber saw her career grand slam hopes come to an end for another year at the hands of Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who defeated Emma Raducanu on Wednesday.

Later on, Britain’s last remaining hope Cameron Norrie will look to reach new ground as the men’s No. 1 attempts to advance to the second week of a grand slam for the first time against Karen Khachanov, while Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz are also in action.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal remain on French Open collision course

Friday 27 May 2022 17:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Defending champion Novak Djokovic and 13-time king of clay Rafael Nadal remain on course for a box-office French Open quarter-final after blowing away their third-round opponents.

Lying in wait for each other in the same quarter of the draw due to Nadal’s world ranking of fifth, the big two are due to collide unusually early at Roland Garros this year.

Djokovic, taking centre stage on Court Philippe-Chatrier, made short work of subdued Slovenian – and one-time representative of Great Britain – Aljaz Bedene, winning 6-3 6-3 6-2.

At the same time, in one of his occasional appearances on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Nadal was dealing with Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp with relative ease, registering a 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory.

The illustrious duo are matching each other almost stride for stride as they pound their way through the tournament.

Friday 27 May 2022 17:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Nadal: “You always feel a little bit the nerves when it comes to closing the match out, so happy to be through in straight sets. I think it was my best match of the tournament, for two sets and a half.”

Van de Zandschulp brings Nadal into the net but sees the Spaniard volley wide to move to 15-30. It’s followed by Nadal thumping a serve out wide and then cutting a volley into the open court to set up match point at 40-30.

He’s made to wait for it, though, after Van de Zandshulp crushes a backhand winner, and then Nadal shanks a backhand over the baseline!

Suddenly, Nadal is faced with break point - but after Van de Zandschulp goes long Nadal puts away the smash to secure the win!

Van de Zandschulp finally made a match of it near the end but Nadal is through to the fourth round without dropping a set. His quarter-final meeting with Novak Djokovic looms and the 13-time champion is looking strong.
