French Open LIVE: Tennis scores and results from Roland Garros after Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff wins

Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek set up a rematch of last year’s French Open final after they both advanced to the last eight on Monday. Gauff reached her first grand slam singles final here last year and was handed a heavy beating by Swiatek, who claimed her second Roland Garros title.

But Gauff is again showing excellent form in Paris and she reached the quarter-finals for the third successive year with a 7-5 6-2 victory over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

Swiatek, meanwhile, has lost only nine games in her four matches, although she was given a helping hand when Ukrainian opponent Lesia Tsurenko retired through illness trailing 5-1 in the opening set.

Meanwhile, Holger Rune survived a fifth-set tie-break against Francisco Cerundolo to set up a French Open quarter-final rematch with Casper Ruud.

Argentinian Cerundolo battled back from two sets to one down to force a decider and then holding three break points at 4-3.

Rune saved all of them, broke serve himself then failed to serve it out but put the disappointment behind him to clinch a 7-6 (3) 3-6 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7) victory after just short of four hours.

Coco Gauff hopes for an improved showing against Iga Swiatek at French Open

Coco Gauff is gunning for revenge against Iga Swiatek when they clash in the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Gauff reached her first grand slam singles final here last year and was handed a heavy beating by Swiatek, who claimed her second Roland Garros title.

Their rivalry is a one-sided 6-0 to the Pole, with Gauff yet to win a set, but the teenager said: “Honestly, since last year I have been wanting to play her, especially at this tournament.

Iga Swiatek won by default, leading 5-1 when her opponent Lesia Tsurenko was unable to continue.

The Ukranian had been the oldest player remaining in the women’s singles draw at 34, but struggled in pain throughout the match.

She needed a medical time out and to have her blood pressure taken.

It was a gutting blow for Tsurenko, who had not dropped a set all tournament.

Andy Murray believes he remains among the elite grass-court players after he began his Wimbledon preparations with a comfortable victory over Chung Hyeon in the first round of the Surbiton Trophy.

Less than seven miles separate the Surbiton Racket and Fitness club and the courts of SW19 and Murray’s journey started with a 6-3 6-2 win as he attempts to be seeded in the men’s single draw next month.

The two-time Wimbledon champion skipped the French Open to focus on his grass season and this was his first match in preparation for the All England Club, where the championships get under way on July 3.

The 36-year-old is ranked 43rd and needs to climb around 10 places to be seeded for Wimbledon where Murray believes he will remain a difficult opponent for anyone.

It took five sets and almost four hours, but Holgar Rune has beaten Francisco Cerundolo.

The number six ranking won the fifth set tie break 10-7 at the end of a thrilling contest that went back and forth for 3 hours 59 minutes.

Rune won the match 3-2 (7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6) against the Argentinian.

Absolutely gutting for Cerundolo, who handed Rune victory with five unforced errors in the fifth set tie break.

New mother Elina Svitolina continued her incredible grand slam return by defeating Daria Kasatkina to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open.

The Ukrainian gave birth to daughter Skai in October and played her first tournament in more than a year at the beginning of April.

She arrived in Paris on the back of a WTA title in Strasbourg and, watched by husband Gael Monfils, extended her winning run to eight matches with a 6-4 7-6 (5) success against ninth seed Kasatkina.

Alfie Hewett adapting to his new status as the man to beat in wheelchair tennis

Alfie Hewett is enjoying being the man to be shot at in wheelchair tennis as he prepares to bid for a fourth French Open title.

The retirement at the beginning of the year of Hewett’s big rival Shingo Kunieda after one of the great tennis careers left the Norfolk player as world number one.

Hewett first won the French Open as a teenager and has been used to being the relative new kid on the block but now he finds a host of younger players challenging him.

Top of that pile is Kunieda’s Japanese compatriot, 17-year-old Tokito Oda, who was beaten by Hewett in the Australian Open final in January.

Hewett told the PA news agency: “It is strange. I’m 25 so I don’t see myself as being the experienced one when you have the likes of Gordy (doubles partner Gordon Reid) and some of the others who are five to 10 years older than me.

“But I guess this is my eighth year on tour so I do have experience. I’ve been fortunate enough to play in some big moments and I thought the Australian Open final demonstrated that, managing the occasion probably in a better way than Tokito did, but he’s such an unbelievable talent.”

Dane Rune just needed to hold his own serve to wrap up victory, but Cerundolo broke back and on the match goes.

Kasatkina hits out at French Open crowd over booing after defeat to Svitolina

Daria Kasatkina has hit out at the French Open crowd after she was booed off court following her defeat by Elina Svitolina.

Knowing Ukrainian players’ stance of not shaking hands with Russian or Belarusian opponents at the end of matches, Kasatkina gave Svitolina a thumbs up, which was reciprocated, before walking to her chair.

Some of the fans on Suzanne Lenglen then responded by booing the Russian as she walked off court.

Francisco Cerundolo is not a happy bunny right now and, frankly, he has every right to be livid. Rune has absolutely pinched this third set with a vital break of serve at 5-4.

Let’s start with the good – Rune brings up set point with an otherworldy forehand as he slides across baseline out wide that arcs in and somehow finds the back left corner of the court. It’s sublime.

But Cerundolo is shouting and holding up two fingers to the umpire and his box - in reference to the clear double bounce that wasn’t spotted earlier in the set and led to him being broken.

A simple hold for Gauff to move to 4-2 and she’s edging closer to victory. Schmiedlova simply has to hold serve in the seventh game of the second set but a gorgeous drop shot from behind the baseline by Gauff brings up deuce.

The Schmiedlova second serve then gets punished again (she’s lost 11 of 30 points on second serve) and Gauff finishes things off for the double break. She’ll serve for the match now

Great work by Cerundolo as he breaks back in the third set against Holger Rune on Lenglen.

A little bit of controversy earlier in the set at 2-1, as the umpire missed a clear double bounce when Rune played a shot behind the baseline (which he also didn’t call on himself). Cerundolo stopped as he assumed it would be called and although he then put away the simple smash, the ball kid had stepped on to the court when he initially stopped and the umpire called a let!

Cerundolo was rightly livid and remonstrated with the umpire to no effect. He would go on to lose that game on his serve, so a bit of poetic justice that he has broken Rune back.

Gauff’s forehand struggles aren’t exactly a secret on the women’s tour and you can see it shorten up and desert her as the pressure ramps up during the game at 5-4.

Schmiedlova stays in the points, earns a break point at 30-40 and then battles hard to take it, putting the ball on Gauff’s forehand side consistently and then finding the winner. Great stuff

Gauff is unperturbed as a drop shot earns another break chance, although Schmiedlova responds with a well-placed passing shot winner. A big first serve sees the underdog survive break point number four but eventually her luck gives out and fifth time is the charm for Gauff. An average speed of 75mph on the second serve isn’t going to get it done for Schmiedlova. Double break for the American.

Could that be the killer blow from Casper Ruud? It’s a break after huge drama.

Ruud initially works himself to 15-40 on the Jarry serve and has two chances to break. The first slips by before great defence from Ruud at 30-40 and then he gets a look at a passing shot down the line with Jarry stranded at the net but goes juuuust wide!

A third break point comes and goes before Jarry goes long to give the Norwegian a fourth chance to break. It looks like Jarry has double-faulted but the umpire climbs down from his chair, checks the clay and says the second serve was in. And now the third is SAVED as well. Jarry goes for it all with a forehand down the line but it drifts harmlessly wide. Jarry chuntering away now, he’s still frustrated about the odd bounce the ball took at 15-40 but Ruud stays focused and sees out the game. A big hold.

After the best part of 4 hours, I’m not sure why I thought this would be a drama-free hold to win it for Haddad Maia... She immediately slips 0-30 down but fights back superbly to 30-30 and then a powerful forehand brings up MATCH POINT at 40-30.

She squandered three match points back at 5-3 but this time, there’s no mistake! Sorribes Tormo moved around the court and a thunderous forehand down the line means HADDAD MAIA WINS.

A frankly ridiculous 3hrs51mins of pain but the Brazilian 14th seed has found a way. Tears at the end - understandably so - but she’s into the quarter-finals. WOW!

Last year’s French Open runner-up Casper Ruud hasn’t been at his best this year at Roland Garros - but will need to be if he is to see off the challenge of Nicolas Jarry on Philippe-Chatrier. The Chilean, ranked 35, defeated Ruud on his way to winning the clay-court tournament in Geneva last week. It was Jarry’s second title on clay this season and the 27-year-old is in the form of his life as he plays in the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time.

Jarry goes on the attack straight away and has a total of five break points in Ruud’s opening service game. He can’t talk any of them, and Ruud escapes with the hold!

Jabeur’s draw has been opened up by Elena Rybakina’s withdrawal from Roland Garros due to illness, which was announced on Saturday ahead of her third-round match. It gave Sara Sorribes Tormo a walkover and the Spaniard is now a set up against the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Sorribes Tormo was involved in controversy yesterday as she was on the doubles team that were playing when opponent Miyu Kato was disqualified for hitting a ball girl.

Ons Jabeur opens the action on Philippe-Chatrier as the fourth round continues but last season’s Wimbledon and US Open finalist says she has been far from her best at Roland Garros.

"There are things that are going well. Others that are going less well. Mentally I'm present. The physical sensations will come back. Tennis sensations also. These things take a lot of time," she said after beating Olga Danilovic on Saturday.

"I have to accept my current condition now, because I was injured quite a lot of times this year. I'm not going to be impatient. I will give time to my body to adapt. And right now I'm winning matches without being at 100%, so I'm learning."

Jabeur is up against American Bernarda Pera, who beat her in straight sets when the two last met in Guangzhou in 2019.

"Another lefty, so it's going to be a tricky one," Jabeur said. "Pera has been playing very well. She's a tough opponent."

World number two Aryna Sabalenka weathered a spectacular first set implosion to beat American Sloane Stephens 7-6(5) 6-4 on Sunday and advance to the French Open quarter-finals.

The Belarusian, who will face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the last eight, gave Stephens, the 2017 U.S. Open champion, no hope at the start, unleashing a barrage of baseline missiles that left the 30-year-old stunned and looking around for help.

Sabalenka, the hardest-hitting player on the women’s tour and the 2023 Australian Open champion, raced to a 5-0 lead with Stephens winning a total of just eight points.

But the American, no stranger to the Paris big stage after reaching the final in 2018, was not done yet, clawing her way back and saving a set point at 5-2 to cut the deficit.

With her own first serve wilting, Sabalenka, in complete freefall by now, missed another two set points at 5-4 on Stephens’ serve before her opponent spectacularly levelled and then held to take it to a tiebreak.

The Belarusian, looking win a second Grand Slam trophy, managed to pull herself together at the last moment, clinching the first set on her fourth opportunity.

She cut down on the unforced errors in the second set but again Stephens battled back from 4-2 down to level before Sabalenka broke again to go 5-4 up and serve out the match. -- Reuters

French Open 2023: Doubles pair disqualified for hitting ball girl on head

Japanese doubles player Miyu Kato has apologised after hitting a ball girl in the head, which resulted in her disqualifcation from the French Open.

Kato and her Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi, the 16th seeds, were leading Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-6 (1) 1-3 in the third round of the women’s doubles when the Japanese player hit the ball down to the other end of the court at the end of a point.

Unaware that the ball was coming, the ball girl was struck directly on the head and began crying.

Kato apologised to the ball girl and lengthy discussions took place before the decision was made to disqualify the pair.

She said she has been forfeited her prize money and points from Roland Garros.

Kato said: “I would like to sincerely apologise to the ball girl, my partner Aldila and team, and my supporters because of today's unfortunate mishap. It was completely unintentional. As a result, I am penalised by RG Roland Garros, forfeiting my prize money and points. I appreciate all your continued support!”

Responding to Kato’s tweet, the French player Alize Cornet said: “Insane decision. I really feel sorry for you but a lot of players (except Marie and Sara obviously) are supporting you.”

Novak Djokovic surpassed Rafael Nadal’s all-time record by reaching his 17th French Open quarter-final.

The 22-time grand slam champion defeated Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3 6-2 6-2 to maintain his run of not having lost before the last eight at Roland Garros since 2010, and set up a clash with 11th seed Karen Khachanov.

Djokovic is still 12 Paris titles behind Nadal, though, and with the Spaniard missing for the first time since 2004, his great rival knows what an opportunity this is.

He said: “I’m proud of it but my attention is already on the next match. Obviously quarter-finals, Khachanov, I know what my goal is here. I’m trying to stay mentally the course and of course not look too far.

“Obviously the performance of today gives me a great deal of confidence about how I felt, about how I played. So I’m looking forward to the next match.”

The French Open quarter-final line-up is almost complete as the fourth round at Roland Garros concludes on Monday.

Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur are among those looking to join Aryna Sabalenka in the last eight of the women’s draw, with the Belarusian showcasing her strength with 7-6 6-4 victory over Sloane Stephens on Sunday night. Swiatek will looking to continue the defence of her title against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, with the world No 1 on a streak of 20 games in a row ahead of this last-16 clash.

In the men’s draw, fourth seed Casper Ruud and sixth seed Holger Rune could set up a rematch of last year’s heated French Open clash with progress to the quarter-finals. They’ll be aiming to join the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight after the pair moved ever closer to a blockbuster semi-final match-up by easing through their fourth-round matches on Sunday.
