French Open LIVE: Tennis results and updates as Iga Swiatek sets up shock Roland Garros final

The French Open women’s final is set but defending champion Iga Swiatek will face a surprise contender after Karolina Muchova stunned second seed Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling contest at Roland Garros

Muchova battled from a break down and saved match point in the deciding set to win an enthralling match 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 in over three hours. It’s the first time the Czech has reached a grand slam final and denied Sabalenka back-to-back majors following her Australian Open triumph earlier this season.

Later on, Swiatek made it three French Open finals in four years after defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia in another excellent battle on Philippe-Chatrier. Swiatek, who is still yet to drop a set at Roland Garros, was pushed hard by the Brazilian but prevailed in a tight tiebreak to win 6-2 7-6.

The result also ensured that Swiatek retained the world No 1 ranking ahead of Sabalenka.

After Stuttgart and Madrid, there was supposed to be Roland Garros. The French Open final looked to have reserved for Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, the world No 1 and world No 2, a clash between the previous two grand slam winners and the latest chapter of a flourishing rivalry.

Sabalenka had looked in unstoppable form in Roland Garros, even at times in Friday’s semi-final. Sabalenka held serve with the chance to face Swiatek for the title; she even had match point.

Then Karolina Muchova happened.

The unseeded 26-year-old Czech was down and out as she trailed 5-2 in the decider. An impressive performance in a grand slam semi-final threatened to be put down as a mere contribution to an absorbing contest as Sabalenka surged ahead, but Muchova rallied from the brink. She won five games in a row to stun Sabalenka and set up a final with Swiatek, who was pushed by Beatriz Haddad Maia but prevailed 6-2 7-6 to reach her third French Open semi-final in four years.

Swiatek is now through to her third French Open final in four years.

“It’s really amazing, honestly,” she says. “I’m happy to play consistently here and I’m excited for Saturday to see where it’s going to go.”

Swiatek is asked about the chellenge of Haddad Maia, who pushed her more than anyone has managed so far.

“For sure, she was using the fact she’s a lefty. She has the game for clay, a lot of top-spin, but she can also play flat and aggressive. She’s a fighter, it wasn’t easy. I’m happy I played so well in the tiebreaker. I’m just glad I was solid and tried to push on every point.”

Karolina Muchova saved a match point to stun Aryna Sabalenka and reach her first grand slam final at the French Open.

The unseeded Czech fought back from 5-2 down in the deciding set to claim a 7-6 (5) 6-7 (5) 7-5 victory in a tremendous contest lasting three hours and 13 minutes.

Sabalenka, who was bidding to win back-to-back slam titles after lifting the Australian Open trophy, appeared to have turned things in her favour but tightened up in sight of the line and Muchova made her pay.

At 43 in the world, the 26-year-old is the fourth lowest-ranked woman to reach the final here, while it is the fifth year in a row that the final will feature an unseeded player.

A delighted Muchova said: “I don’t really know what happened. The atmosphere, it’s unbelievable. I just tried to keep fighting and it worked. I’m so happy.”

But it’s followed by a rare error from Muchova! Another break point - and this time Sabalenka doesn’t hold back. She rips a stunning backhand return cross that catches the line, and then follows in with the forehand winner. Stunning.

A simply sublime set of tennis, by both players really, but from Karolina Muchova in particular. The way she came into the net and varied the speed/placement of her shots was a masterclass.

That’s as good a set of tennis as we’ve seen at the French Open this year. There’s no danger of Aryna Sabalenka rolling over though, she’ll come out firing in this second set I’d suggest.

It’s a great start for Muchova as she gets the early mini-break immediately and then holds strong on her own two serves that follow. It’s awesome seeing Muchova come into the net so frequently. A grass-court tactic employed on the red clay of Roland Garros. Great fun.

Sabalenka isn’t going to just let this set slip away though. She attacks the first point and overpowers her foe but another stunning backhand drop volley from Muchova makes it 15-15. That wasn’t easy at all but she made it look so. Federer-esque in its execution to be honest.

That Sabalenka power is potent though. A ferocious forehand winner takes the game to 30-30. Muchova digs in to bring up set point but another powerful groundstroke wrongfoots her and it’s SAVED!

Now a break point for the Belarusian and it’s there! Fist pump and a glare from Sabalenka after Muchova goes long as SABALENKA BREAKS BACK. How much will the Czech star rue that missed opportunity?

A beautiful crunching forehand winner off a mid-court ball then helps her finish the game. Disaster skilfully swerved by the Czech star and we head to the business end of the set at 4-4.

But Sabalenka punishes a weak second serve and then brings up deuce, having trailed 40-15. And now it’s a break point for Sabalenka as she crushes a forehand return that Muchova can’t get back. SAVED! Good time for a second ace as Muchova punches one down the ‘t’.

Hmmm, a second break point after a forehand into the net but again SAVED as Muchova comes into the net well. Then, great defensive play by Muchova as she’s run all over the court but a pinpoint backhand means Sabalenka can’t make the volley and she sees out the game. Damage averted for the underdog

Here we go then. Can either Karolina Muchova or Beatriz Haddad Maia spring an upset and prevent Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top two, from meeting in the French Open final?

Muchova has the experience of playing in a grand slam semi-final before, although it has been a couple of years. The Czech reached the final four of the Australian Open in 2021 after defeating home favourite Ash Barty, but was then beaten by Jennifer Brady.

Sabalenka has been in brilliant form since the start of the year, regularly competing for the big titles. It’s no surprise to see her back in the semi-finals of a grand slam, now the question is whether she can add a second title after her Australian Open triumph.

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia was left stunned following her French Open quarter-final victory over seventh seed Ons Jabeur on Wednesday, crediting her patience for landing the biggest win of her career.

The 27-year-old battled from a set down to win a second set tiebreak before running away with the third for a 3-6 7-6(5) 6-1 victory and a first ever spot in the last four where she will face top seed Iga Swiatek.

“I think a tennis match is like a marathon. It’s not a 100 metre race,” the world number 14 said. “I think one of my qualities is that I wait and I’m very patient and I never give up.

“So I wait for the moment because I know that my level is high. So even if I’m not playing well or even if I’m missing a few shots one moment, the tennis will appear, and I’ll have my opportunity to go for it.”

She looked to be on her way out after the first set but refused to be broken in the entire second set to battle back and become the first Brazilian woman since Maria Bueno in 1968 to reach a Slam semi-final.

She is also the first female player from her country to book a last-four spot at Roland Garros in the Open Era.

Iga Swiatek maintained her unbeaten record against Coco Gauff in their French Open rematch to move through to the semi-finals.

The pair had met in the final 12 months ago, with Gauff winning just four games, and the American had not won a set in their six previous clashes.

The statistic remains, although Gauff at least pushed the world No 1 in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat, and will feel she might have done better.

The 19-year-old was unable to take the few chances she had to gain the ascendancy, particularly in the second set, and Swiatek made her pay.

The top seed has lost only 15 games in five matches, and she said: “I haven’t spent much time on court so I’m happy that today was a tighter match.”

French Open player disqualified for hitting ball girl wins mixed doubles title

An incredible story in the mixed doubles final!

Miyu Kato has won the mixed doubles title - just days after she was disqualified from the women’s doubles event for hitting a ball girl in the head.

Kato triumphed alongside Tim Puetz, defeating Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus on a champions tiebreak 4-6 6-4 (10-6).

It capped a rollercoaster week for the Japanese player, who was thrown out of the women’s doubles alongside her partner Aldila Sutjiadi for inadvertently striking a ball girl when she hit the ball down the other end of the court at the end of a point.

After the ball girl started crying, Kato was disqualified from the event and was made to forfeit her prize money and points won during the women’s doubles event.

But the 28-year-old found redemption to win the mixed doubles title on Thursday - winning €122,000 alongside Puetz for winning the tournament.

Karolina Muchova defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 6-2 to reach her second grand slam semi-final.

Muchova, 26, suffered an abdominal injury during her run to the semis at the Australian Open that kept her out for seven months and she was ranked outside the top 200 as recently as September.

With her run here, Muchova is set to return to the top 20, and she said: “It’s been an incredible two weeks and I’m just glad I’m still in the competition.”

Aryna Sabalenka came out against Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko after returning to the French Open press room and facing another barrage of off-court questions.

The Australian Open champion refused to speak to the general tennis press after her third and fourth-round matches following tense exchanges with a Ukrainian journalist.

She changed that stance after beating Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-4 6-4 in the quarter-finals amid more boos from the Roland Garros crowd and immediately was pressed further on her political stance.

Sabalenka has previously been pictured with Lukashenko and, asked if she still supported him, the 25-year-old said: “It’s a tough question. I don’t support war, meaning I don’t support Lukashenko right now.”

Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the semi-finals of the French Open after ending Elina Svitolina’s run in Paris. There was controversy at the end as Sabalenka waited at the net, with Svitolina already making her point clear that she was not going to shake the Belarusian’s hand. But during the match, Sabalenka was the clear winner as the Australian Open champion won 6-4 6-4.

Swiatek has been in supreme form as the world No 1 looks to defend her French Open crown, with the Pole defeating Coco Gauff in straight sets to advance to the last four on Wednesday. Swiatek has yet to drop a set at this year’s Roland Garros and now faces Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, who stunned Ons Jabeur to reach her first ever grand slam semi-final.
