The agents of Frenkie de Jong are encouraging PSG and a Premier League big hitter to sign their client, and why a move to a direct Man Utd rival might happen has been revealed.

The Red Devils remain firmly in the hunt to sign Barcelona ace, Frenkie de Jong. Erik ten Hag has identified his fellow Dutchman as the perfect candidate to pull the strings in his midfield.

Manchester United have struck a deal worth an initial £63m with Barcelona. ESPN report broad agreements on the payment structure and add-ons are also in place.

However, the biggest hurdle United are facing is convincing De Jong Old Trafford is the right place to be.

Indeed, De Jong has thus far maintained the stance that he is unwilling to leave Barcelona. He is settled in the city and wishes to fight for his place at his dream club.

United’s newest strategy was recently detailed by the Spanish press. The Red Devils hope opening the chequebook will twist De Jong’s arm, and it was claimed they are even wiling to absorb the entirety of the €17m in deferred wages he is owed by Barcelona.

However, according to ESPN, United’s problems could double if De Jong’s agents get their way.

Chelsea, PSG encouraged to act

They report states De Jong’s representatives are encouraging both PSG and Chelsea to join the bidding and potentially hijack Man Utd’s deal.

The obvious response to that development is if De Jong is adamant he wants to stay at Barca, why would Chelsea or PSG succeed where United haven’t?

The report acknowledges De Jong’s desire is indeed to remain where he is. However, if the Dutchman is ultimately forced out of Catalonia, he ‘would rather join a Champions League club’.

Given United’s sixth-placed finish last season, Ten Hag’s side are unable to satisfy that demand. The same cannot be said of Chelsea and PSG.

In fact, the Blues have drawn fleeting links with De Jong throughout United’s drawn-out pursuit.

New Blues owner, Todd Boehly, was reported to have held preliminary discussions with Barcelona about De Jong in early July.

News of Chelsea’s interest levels has gone quiet since then, though if De Jong does leave Barcelona, it may not be to join Man Utd.

Frenkie de Jong steal unthinkable for United

The idea of missing out on Ten Hag’s No 1 target is unpalatable enough for most United fans. The thought of him joining a direct rival would be unthinkable in the extreme.

Yet for as long as De Jong’s future remains uncertain, any and all outcomes remain possible.

Barcelona are desperate to sell in order to finance other moves. They have earmarked around £50m for the signing of Raphinha and have since forged a £42.5m agreement (including add-ons) to sign Robert Lewandowski.

There had been talk of Barca banishing De Jong from their pre-season tour of America. However, the Spaniards have backed down from that powerplay with De Jong now confirmed to be among their travelling party.

That could be a sign Barcelona are beginning to come to terms with De Jong staying where he is. That scenario wouldn’t please Man Utd, but it would at least keep him out of the clutches of Chelsea.
