Barcelona are determined to cash in on Frenkie de Jong once and for all in January, though Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag won’t have a deal all his own way, per reports.

The future of Frenkie de Jong was undoubtedly the number one transfer saga of the summer. Manchester United agreed a deal worth £73,6m with Barcelona for the Dutchman.

Chelsea were also heavily involved in the conversation, though both English clubs were ultimately left disappointed.

Barcelona were fully on board with a sale as they strived to lower their bloated wage bill. However, the player himself is settled in the city and had zero intention of upping sticks.

Regardless, LaLiga president, Javier Tebas, recently warned Barcelona their wage bill remains too high and the financial levers they’ve pulled are running out.

“Barca has to reduce the wage bill,” he said. “Next year there will be no levers and they will have to reduce the salary limit that may correspond to them, which will be €400-odd million.”

Fabrizio Romano reported both Man Utd and Chelsea are continuing to monitor De Jong’s situation. Ten Hag in particular will be keeping a close eye on his fellow countryman after he was installed as United’s primary target in the summer.

Barcelona backed into a corner

Now, according to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona will again push to sell De Jong when the next window opens in January.

They state Barcelona president Joan Laporta and his board will entertain any and all offers the receive.

The issue of falling in line with Financial Fair Play rules from 2023 onwards is cited. To do so, Jordi Alba and Memphis Depay could be on the chopping block too.

But it is De Jong who Barca will be the keenest to shift. He is among the club’s top earners, currently pocketing north of £300,000-a-week.

Frenkie de Jong links likely to increase

De Jong notched his first goal of the season against Cadiz on Saturday night and is doing little to dissuade the likes of Chelsea and United from trying to sign him a second time in January.

Furthermore, he is likely to feature heavily for the Netherlands at the World Cup. A strong showing there will once again make him the talk of the town with the winter window quickly following proceedings in Qatar.

Of course, the main barrier any suitors must overcome is convincing De Jong to leave Barcelona.

Though if United continue their resurgence under Ten Hag or Chelsea hit the ground running under Graham Potter, there is always a chance De Jong may view those clubs more favourably than he did last month.
