Manchester United and Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement over the transfer fee for Frenkie de Jong, but big issues with the deal remain.

United have been chasing the Netherlands midfielder for a number of weeks now. New United boss Erik ten Hag wants to rekindle ties with his fellow Dutchman following their spell together at Ajax.

However, a number of problems have stalled the progress of the deal so far. And the issue over the transfer fee is only scratching the surface.

De Jong has continually insisted this summer that he does not want to leave Barcelona for Man Utd. And he has repeated his stance this week as Red Devils chiefs have travelled to Spain to seek a breakthrough.

Furthermore, Barcelona still owe De Jong €17million (£14.3million) in deferred wages. While they see him as their most saleable asset to ease their financial concerns after making fresh midfield signings, the fact that they owe the player they are trying to sell is a major hurdle.

According to The Athletic, both clubs have now got over the first key hurdle and are in ‘total agreement’ over the transfer fee for De Jong.

United will pay the La Liga side a guaranteed €75million (£63million) plus as much as €10million (£8.47million) in add-ons.

That sum will satisfy Barcelona, but amid the other problems in the deal, the fee is just the start.

Man Utd still face De Jong problems

In a potential boost, though, Sport reports that De Jong and his advisors are becoming isolated over their desire to stay put.

Indeed, the Spanish publication that ‘everyone is pushing to unblock’ the impasse.

Chief among those pushing to get the deal done are Barcelona president Joan Laporta and transfer advisor Mateu Alemany.

Man Utd are now also on a mission to convince their target over Old Trafford. Previous reports claimed that United have implored Barca to convince De Jong to leave by the end of the week, or the Red Devils will withdraw their offer.

Midfielder deal could have problems

From their perspective, United need to get their marquee midfielder deal done as quickly as possible.

He is a player Ten Hag knows well and thinks he can get the best out of in a new role at Old Trafford.

On the flipside, there have to be concerns for United even if they manage to convince De Jong.

He has said for a number of weeks now that he does not want to leave Barcelona, whose Champions League football next season is a step up from United’s Europa League.

Ten Hag needs signings who will fully buy into his methods. While De Jong has done that before at Ajax, Ten Hag needs to be absolutely sure the Dutchman will do it again.
