Tottenham will reportedly hold a fresh round of talks with Sporting Lisbon in the hopes of securing the signing of wing-back Pedro Porro.
Tottenham’s interest in Porro has been evident for a few months. The wing-back seems like he would certainly be an upgrade on the right side of the field.
He is clearly able to bomb up field and get involved in attacks. That is evidenced in his stats over the past few seasons, but during the current campaign especially.
The Spaniard has been directly involved in 12 goals in just 22 games in all competitions this season. It’s clear to see why Tottenham eyebrows have been raised at that.
Those are fantastic attacking returns for a player whose role is as much a defensive one as it is an attacking one.
Antonio Conte appears keen to snare the Sporting Lisbon star. It seems that Porro would fit perfectly into the manager’s system at Tottenham.
A recent report stated that an agreement had been made ‘in principle’ for the signing. However, that report seemed to suggest there was still the issue of the fee that will be paid for Porro.
That has been the main sticking point up to now. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy seems insistent on not paying Porro’s release clause of £40million, instead hoping to drive the price down.
New talks set for Porro transfer
As such, it is as yet unclear if Tottenham will be able to land Porro, and if so, how much he will cost them.
The Daily Mail reports that Spurs are ‘looking to hold further talks’ over the transfer. Whether or not Levy will stand firm on not paying the £40million remains to be seen.
That will likely become more clear following the talks. In any case, the club are clearly very keen to complete the snare of Porro. As such, they will hope things can be sorted out soon in regards to the transfer.
If Sporting won’t budge on the fee, it might be as well for Tottenham just to pay it. Should Levy not want to do that, it could create a rift between himself and Conte.
Doing so would not be great for Spurs, as he could well walk away from the club – he did so in better circumstances at Inter Milan, after winning Serie A.
Conte has been the best manager Tottenham have had for years, so Levy should be doing all he can to keep him happy. Given Porro looks like the perfect addition to the side, paying a little bit extra to sign him could go a long way for the club’s future.
Porro perfect for Spurs
The right-back options at Tottenham are not at the level they would hope for currently. Emerson Royal has played in that position most this season.
However, that Matt Doherty has also started six Premier League games this terms shows the club don’t really know who their best option is.
The pair were chopped and changed last season, too, before Doherty sustained an injury.
As such, bringing in a man that they know can nail down that spot gives them one less worry. That should make the side stronger as a whole, so paying the release clause seems the best course of action if they need to.
