Liverpool and Roma continued their pre-season preparations as Marco Borriello's last-minute goal gave Roma a 1-0 victory in Boston but a shoulder injury to Fabio Borini puts his £14m move to Sunderland in serious doubt.

Liverpool and Sunderland have agreed a fee for the striker but the Italian elected to travel with Liverpool's squad to the US to try and earn a place in Brendan Rodgers plans.

The first half at Fenway Park produced no goals, with Francesco Totti going closest. New signing, ex-Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole, pulled back a cross for the veteran striker to knee past the near post. As the half progressed, Cole found space down the left behind the Liverpool defence, hinting that he may be a useful attacking outlet for his new club.

That defensive weakness aside, Liverpool were the better of the two sides, appearing to enjoy more of the possession, and focused on switching the play from one wing to another while looking to open up the Roma defence which sat deep.

Brendan Rodgers got the chance to look at new signing Emre Can, and youngster Jordan Ibe, with both players giving calm and assured, if not spectacular, performances in midfield.

Rudi Garcia put out an experimental side, lacking the injured Kevin Strootman - linked with Manchester United but not yet in full training - and other senior members of his squad. However, both sides will be content with a demanding work out in front of the Boston crowd. Both sides made large numbers of changes, and Borriello's late goal meant almost nothing to the two teams.

12' - BORINI SUBSTITUTION - Emre Can replaces Fabio Borini, who injures his shoulder in the early stages. The injury could delay any potential transfer to Sunderland.

33' - TOTTI SHOT - Ashley Cole pulls back a cross and Francesco Totti almost knees the ball in at the near post.

48' - COUTINHO CHANCE - Philippe Coutinho skids a shot from the edge of the box just wide.

57' - LAMBERT SHOT - Rickie Lambert slams a shot high to the left of the goal, but Skorupski dives across quickly.

88' - JONES SAVE - Antonio Sanabria rifles a shot across goal and Jones does well to palm behind.

90' - BORIELLO SCORES - A cross from the right bounces towards Borriello and then off him into the far corner; a poor quality goal to finish the match.

Will Borini's injury stop any potential transfer? With his move to Sunderland already in the balance, the shoulder injury he suffered could stop any summer move if it proves serious enough.
