‘Frustrated’ Arsenal star ‘plotting’ summer exit as Newcastle line up three signings
Scotland international Kieran Tierney is looking to leave Arsenal in the summer transfer window amid interest from Newcastle United, according to reports.
The Gunners have are having an outstanding season in the Premier League with Mikel Arteta’s side leading the way after 24 matches.
Arsenal, who beat Leicester City 1-0 on Saturday, are currently two points ahead of second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand as they look to win their first title for 20 years.
Arteta has maintained a fairly consistent side throughout the season and that has seen Tierney and others having to settle for a bit-part role.
The Scotland international joined Arsenal from Celtic in 2019 but the left-back has been plagued by injuries since arriving in north London and summer signing Oleksandr Zinchenko is now preferred by Arteta.
Tierney has only managed four starts in the Premier League this term with 12 of his other 21 appearances in all competitions coming off the bench.
And now the Daily Mirror claims that Tierney is ‘plotting’ his ‘escape’ from Arsenal as Newcastle United ‘prepare for triple transfer swoop’.
The Magpies are preparing ‘a summer move’ for Tierney ‘who has become increasingly frustrated at the Emirates’ with Newcastle looking to ‘make their own title challenge next season through big-name reinforcements in the summer’.
Tierney is ‘anxious for regular first team football is believed to be open to a move to the North East to join manager Eddie Howe’s Tyneside revolution’ with Arsenal probably looking to recoup the £25m they paid Celtic for the defender.
The report adds that ambitious Newcastle are ‘still on the trail’ of Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, ‘monitoring’ Brighton striker Evan Ferguson and their ‘scouts are also running checks on in-demand Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott’.
Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton thinks Tierney “would suit” Newcastle if he made the move from Arsenal to St James’ Park.
On whether he would get more playing time at Newcastle, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he could.
“I have always liked Kieran Tierney as a footballer. It is hard for me to say but when he was at Celtic he was outstanding. For Scotland as well.
“I knew it was going to be a big jump going down to the Premier League but I knew he was ready for it. Unfortunately they have brought in Zinchenko who has been outstanding.
“But I think somewhere like Newcastle, where he would be loved, they would love the way he plays, I think that would suit. For me, I think he is a better player overall than their current options.”
