Fulham are closing in on a surprise loan deal to sign Leeds United winger Dan James, according to reports.
As long as Leeds can capture the signing of Bamba Dieng from Marseille, James will be on his way to Craven Cottage until the end of the season. Fulham have been in talks with Leeds on Thursday to negotiate a temporary move for the Wales international.
Sky Sports suggest the deal is not yet done, but Fabrizio Romano states the deal is “set to be completed”. Leeds will also land Dieng – a 22-year-old Senegalese forward for around €10m from Marseille.
Dieng is heading to Elland Road with the Whites hoping to get a deal over the line before Thursday’s 11pm deadline. And director of football Victor Orta confirmed a deal was happening with Dieng.
“Agreed. Let’s welcome Bamba Dieng and we will continue to work on Gapko,” replied Orta when replying to a tweet about getting behind Dieng.
Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has used James four times this season, but he was only on the bench against Everton this week.
And the American coach refused to give anything away during his press conference on Thursday.
‘No comment’ from Marsch
On the possibility of further business, Marsch said: “No comment because there is so much going on at Elland Road. Victor [Orta] is active.
“Different discussions have been made about strikers. I’m not sure how it will play out. I haven’t had an update yet.”
James, 24, is understood to be seeking regular first-team football ahead of the World Cup which starts in just over two months time. And it appears that Marsch was not able to give James that guarantee despite an injury to Rodrigo.
There has been interest in the former Manchester United winger. Three other Premier League clubs, including Spurs have registered an interest in him.
Sky Sports though suggest that James felt that he would not get the game time he wanted if he headed south to join Antonio Conte’s men.
Just what benefit Marsch will get by sending James on loan is questionable. But after significant game time last season, the winger looked to have dropped down the pecking order under Marsch.
