Fulham still feel they can get a permanent deal for Neco Williams over the line as Liverpool reportedly field fresh transfer interest from Southampton.

The right-back has enjoyed an impressive rise since making his Liverpool breakthrough. However, he does not look to have a long-term future at Anfield after developments since the turn of the year.

Transfer interest in Williams is rising after he moved on loan to Fulham in January and helped put the finishing touches to their promotion push.

The 21-year-old then cemented his rise earlier this month by starring as Wales secured their World Cup spot via the play-offs.

What’s more, Liverpool have signed exciting right-back prospect Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen. They are subsequently listening to offers for Williams, who is not short of suitors.

Fulham want to sign the full-back permanently as they look to smoothen their Premier League transition. Nottingham Forest also earned promotion last season and are aware that they could struggle to seal a permanent deal for last season’s Middlesbrough loanee Djed Spence.

Nevertheless, Sky Sports News (20/06, 15:49) brings Southampton into the transfer mix.

The Saints have approached Liverpool over Williams as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of next season.

However, the report adds that Fulham remain in pole position for the Wales star. He built up a strong relationship with Cottagers boss Marco Silva last season which is a big factor.

Still, Williams worked with Forest boss Steve Cooper in the Liverpool academy earlier in his career. He could yet decide to move there instead. PSV Eindhoven have also enquired about Williams, but Southampton’s interest is ‘more serious’.

In any case, Sky Sports News concludes that Liverpool want as much as £20million for Williams.

Williams has had various chances in the Liverpool first team, making 32 appearances.

However, his opportunities will always be limited with Trent Alexander-Arnold so effective as Jurgen Klopp’s first choice.

He therefore needs a move away to advance his career. Indeed, Wales boss Robert Page advised Williams to move on in January to maintain his Wales form.

And he needs to do so again – this time permanently. Not only will a permanent move away keep him in top shape for Wales, it will also benefit his club career.
