Fulham will exercise caution over Tom Cairney following his return from a knee injury.

The captain was a substitute last week after nearly two months out but boss Slavisa Jokanovic is wary about rushing him back into the first team. The midfielder has been troubled by a knee problem all season and, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Aston Villa, Jokanovic said: “I didn’t plan to make him play 45 minutes last weekend, but in the situation we were in, we decided to take this risk.

“It’s normal that he’s not at his best, but we believe he showed important promise, and every day he feels better. But we must be careful with him.

“Normally I’d prefer to use him always, but I must respect the competition and I must manage this situation best I can.

“I expect he can be part of the [Villa] game and I’ll try and choose what I believe is best for him and for my team."
