Fulton hosts first ever wrestling Regional, advances three wrestlers to Sectionals

Feb. 5—FULTON, Ill. — For the first time in school history the Fulton Steamers hosted a IHSA Class 1A Regional, welcoming ten other schools on Saturday morning.

Individually the Steamers qualified three wrestlers for the IHSA Class 1A Sectional in Byron this Saturday.

Freshman Zander Ketelsen started off the day at 106 pounds for the Steamers, earning his first win of the day with a win by fall in 30 seconds over Kewanee's Gideon Richards. Ketelsen then defeated Sherrard's Luke Werner by decision 11-7 in the semifinals.

Being in the championship locked him in to advance to Sectionals but he dropped the finale to Riverdale's Benjamin Porter 10-2. Ketelsen is 20-14 on the year.

Junior Skylier Crooks was the next Steamer to advance, winning his first match in 1:03 over Riverdale's Brennan Huggins at 157 pounds.

He then defeated Rockfall's Trail Stonitsch 15-4 to advance to the championship round. Crooks fell in the championship match to Newman's Daniel Kelly 17-7. Crooks sits at 24-15 on the season.

Finally, Fulton's Mason Kuebel placed second at 175 pounds.

He started the day with a win by fall in 36 seconds over Sherrard's Cooper Thomas. He then took a close win over Orion's Nolan Loete 4-3 to advance to the championship round.

He was defeated by fall in 4:47 by Zachary Bradley from Riverdale.

Kuebel is in his sophomore season and is 32-15 on the season.
