Aidy Boothroyd

Northampton chairman David Cardoza has made it clear manager Aidy Boothroyd has cash to splash in the January transfer window, despite admitting the club had already "spent far too much" this season.

The Cobblers find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Football League with more than half the term gone and are in urgent need of an upturn in form. Cardoza has backed Boothroyd to guide his side to safety but conceded he may have to allow the former Watford boss to dip deep into the club's coffers to ensure survival.

He told the Northampton Chronicle: "We've spent far too much this season but we're bottom of the league and we've got to make sure that we're good enough to stay up."

Cardoza added: "Personally I think the squad of players we've got under Aidy are good enough but we've got to make sure and we've got to use January to do that.

"We've already signed a goalkeeper and a couple of players on loan and we're willing to make some more signings.

"We have to do that.

"The only thing that matters at this moment in time is being good enough to stay up."
