Championship promotion-chasers Featherstone have re-signed France international Gadwin Springer following his exit from Super League strugglers Toulouse.

The 29-year-old prop was granted an immediate release earlier this week by Toulouse, for whom he only played five games for since arriving ahead of this season.

Featherstone originally had Springer for 2022, but Toulouse offered him a Super League contract so he returned to France.

Springer met with Featherstone representatives on Wednesday and the deal was done quickly. He could play in Saturday’s home game against Newcastle Thunder.

Rovers chief executive Martin Vickers said: “There was a lot of interest in Gadwin having relocated back to the UK.

“We had originally signed Gadwin for 2022 before Toulouse offered him a Super League contract.

“We’re grateful to have the opportunity to work with him once again, he’s fit and raring to go.”

Featherstone boss happy to link up with Gadwin Springer again

Featherstone coach Brian McDermott commented: “I’m pleased to have the opportunity to work with Gadwin again.

“I think he’ll bring a lot of power and size to our pack which we’re going to need heading into the business end of the season.”

Springer has previously played under McDermott at Toronto Wolfpack.

The 6ft 2in front-rower has won five caps for France and will be hoping to play in his first World Cup this autumn.

Springer has made 108 club appearances for Catalans Dragons, Castleford, Toronto Wolfpack, Halifax, Featherstone and Toulouse.

Rovers are currently second in the Championship table, three points behind leaders Leigh.

Featherstone were stunned by Batley last weekend and will be hoping to return to winning ways this Saturday when they host full-time side Newcastle Thunder, who are still searching for a new coach following the resignation of Eamon O’Carroll.
