Gambia vs Cameroon LIVE!

The hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations continue their quest for glory with a game against minnows Gambia this afternoon.

Japoma Stadium in Douala hosts the Lions’ quarter-final tie with the lowest-ranked side that qualified for the tournament, with the West Africans 150th in the world and enjoying their AFCON debut.

Cameroon are no strangers to contending with plucky upstarts however, having overcome a Comoros side without a registered goalkeeper in their last-16 tie. Gambia, meanwhile, downed Guinea courtesy of a Musa Barrow goal.

All eyes will be on captain Vincent Aboubakar once again with the striker currently the tournament’s top scorer and very much harbouring ambitions of lifting the trophy next Sunday on home soil.

Egypt or Morocco await the victor of this quarter-final tie, two teams who will play tomorrow with Burkina Faso taking on Tunisia later today.

FT: Gambia 0-2 Cameroon

17:50 , Malik Ouzia

The hosts are the first team into the semi-finals. They’ll play either Egypt or Morocco for a place in the final.

17:45 , Malik Ouzia

87 mins: What a chance this is for a third. I’ve no idea where the Gambian defence is but Onana spots that they’re AWOL and puts Clinton Njié clean through on goal with one ball over the top.

He’s not helped by the pitch again, the ball bobbling up awkwardly, and he tries to lob the ‘keeper but doesn’t get enough height on it.

17:39 , Malik Ouzia

81 mins: No hat-trick for Toko Ekambi. Cameroon take the chance to give both him and Martin Hongla a brief rest with an eye on the semi-finals.

17:36 , Malik Ouzia

79 mins: They’ve shown a bit more ambition since going behind, have Gambia, but only in terms of the numbers they’ve committed forward. Andre Onana still hasn’t had a save to make.

17:29 , Malik Ouzia

72 mins: That really would have wrapped it up. Anguissa lays off to Aboubakar, who shapes to curl one into the far corner but starts it too wide and it whistles by the post.

17:28 , Malik Ouzia

70 mins: Into the final 20 minutes we go and Cameroon are pretty much cruising. It’s looking like a game too far for Gambia.

17:21 , Malik Ouzia

63 mins: Now what for Gambia?

They’d actually just made a tripe substitution moments before that second goal and having spent the entire first half sitting in they’ve got to chase the game now. Cameroon look a big threat every time they come forward.

One foot in the semi-finals!

Hong gets in down the left and lays it on a plate for Toko Ekambi at the far post. Despite a bobble or two as it runs across the face of goal, he makes no mistake, guiding into the roof of the net.

GOAL! Gambia 0-1 Cameroon | Karl Toko Ekambi 50’

17:08 , Malik Ouzia

There’s the breakthrough!

It’s brilliant from Toko Ekambi, who gets up early and directs a cracking header into the far corner from Fai’s cross.

17:06 , Malik Ouzia

48 mins: Ooof. Ngadeu-Ngadjui is the first Cameroon player into the book as he slides in about half-an-hour late on Ibou Touray.

KICK-OFF!

We are back underway...

17:02 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams are on their way back out. Can Cameroon break through or will Gambia hold firm?

16:56 , Malik Ouzia

Cameroon haven’t done a great deal wrong so far and Gambia are living pretty dangerously. But if they can get to the hour-mark you could see a bit of desperation creep in for the home side.

HT: Gambia 0-0 Cameroon

16:47 , Malik Ouzia

Nothing in it at the break...

16:46 , Malik Ouzia

45+1 mins: Just the one minute to be added...

16:41 , Malik Ouzia

40 mins: Not even half-time and Gaye is in the book for time wasting. Gambia aren’t happy but you can see why they’re desperate to get to the interval.

16:36 , Malik Ouzia

36 mins: What a save!

Aboubakar thinks he’s scored as he meets Fai’s cross with a powerful header but Baboucarr Gaye spreads himself and makes the block at close-quarters.

16:32 , Malik Ouzia

31 mins: That’s close, too. Castelletto floats an early ball in and Aboubakar gets across his man to flick a header towards the far corner but it drifts inches wide. Pressure building...

16:30 , Malik Ouzia

29 mins: Thought it was in!

Collins Fai drives forward from full-back and hammers a strike towards the top corner. It’s actually a good yard wide in the end but the ball catches in the outside of the net and plenty inside the ground were up celebrating what they thought was the opener.

16:27 , Malik Ouzia

26 mins: Decent little opening for Nouhou Tolo but his touch rather runs away from him as he breaks into the box and in the end he has to pull the trigger on the stretch from a tight angle, the ball bobbling into the ‘keeper’s arms.

16:22 , Malik Ouzia

21 mins: First yellow card of the game and it goes to Noah Sonko, a little harshly, as he tussles with Aboubakar as the striker tries to wriggle free on halfway.

16:16 , Malik Ouzia

15 mins: Chance!

Ngameleu delivers from the right and Colley goes walkabout at the near-post, allowing Aboubakar to meet it with a back-heeled flick but Gomez has tracked him well and does enough to divert it over the bar.

16:14 , Malik Ouzia

13 mins: First real bit of Cameroonian pressure but the underdogs stand up to it well as two crosses are well cleared before Ngameleu’s strike is charged down. They’ll have to be resolute this afternoon, you feel.

16:10 , Malik Ouzia

8 mins: All very scrappy so far. Gambia have a decent opportunity to deliver but the referee’s whistle goes while Bobb’s free-kick is in flight and gives a free-kick to Cameroon for a bit of wrestling.

16:04 , Malik Ouzia

3 mins: This is the last game scheduled to be played at the Japoma Stadium and I think it’s just as well, to be honest - the pitch looks absolutely shocking once again and it means both sides are struggling to settle here.

A reminder that the winner of this afternoon’s clash will face either Egypt or Morocco in the semi-final. The former have really struggled for goals, scoring just twice in their four games, while Morocco have been pretty impressive for my money.

Standard Sport prediction

14:02 , Malik Ouzia

As wonderful story as the Gambian campaign has been, it’s impossible to look past a Cameroon win on home soil.

Cameroon to win 2-0.

Team news

13:50 , Malik Ouzia

As it stands, no major changes are expected from either side, though it’ll be interesting to see whether Cameroon look to go on the offensive again.

Having seen Gambia prove dangerous on the counter, António Conceição could look to drop an attacker in place of more defensive solidity.
