Gareth Southgate hailed Jarrod Bowen for the West Ham forward’s England debut on Saturday afternoon.

The forward’s hugely successful season at club level led to a first international call-up for this summer’s Nations League campaign, despite never having represented England at any level through the age groups.

England fell to a shock 1-0 defeat in Budapest although Bowen did impress in the opening stages and, given some of the injury concerns heading into a clash with Germany on Tuesday, there is a chance he could be afforded another start.

Speaking after the loss at the Puskas Arena, Southgate was full of praise for the 25-year-old.

“I think Jarrod adapted really well, he looked dangerous from the start,” he said.

"He probably had most of our attempts on goal, couldn’t quite find that final bit of quality to actually steer the finishes past the keeper but his runs were dangerous, he pressed with endeavour for the team and so I’m sure he’ll be really pleased with the way he has done."
