Is Garry Monk actually doing that badly?

Things at Swansea are pretty depressing. The general feeling around the club is similar to back in February 2014, just before Michael Laudrup was sacked.

But is it as bad as we think, or has the situation been blown out of proportion?

Interestingly, a comparison table emerged this week comparing the start of this season with the beginning of last season - and things didn’t actually look that different.

The biggest difference seems to be the table position. The Swans currently sit in 14th place with 14 points, while last year we were in 8th place with 19 points.

We’ve only won three games this year, while at this stage last year we’d won five. However we’ve actually only lost one more game than a year ago (five compared to four).

So yes, there are differences - but apart from table position there are also many similarities.

Of course, I’m not saying things are rosy and we should stop worrying, because the style of football we are playing is definitely concerning. And when I say style, I use it loosely - there is no style at the moment.

We’ve lost the trademark passing and possession football that saw us storm into and cement ourselves in the Premier League. The defence is porous, the midfield is sloppy and the attack is toothless. Which is bizarre, considering the quality players occupying these positions.

So is Garry Monk doing his job that badly?

There’s no denying this has been his worst season to date and he’s certainly made some questionable decisions lately… but I’m not sure all the hype and fuss made by the media is fully justified.

A couple more losses and a few weeks in the actual relegation zone and then the #MonkOut brigade have a point.

But for now maybe all he needs a little patience, a bit more support and his players to start performing.
