Gary Lineker agrees with Alan Shearer's damning Leicester City verdict
Leicester City played as if “they were expecting to be beaten”, Alan Shearer said in a critical assessment of their performance against Chelsea.
The Match of the Day pundit described City’s display as “very flat” and found fault with the lack of cohesion in their press and their tendency to pump the ball up the pitch aimlessly. That allowed Chelsea to claim victory without needing to “get out of second gear”.
Shearer said: “I thought they (City) were very flat today. I was expecting more from them. They went out and they were expecting to be beaten, I thought.

“There was not a lot of pressure on the ball. They got men behind the ball and when they do that, you think they’re going to make it really difficult for the opposition, but I didn’t think Chelsea had to get out of second gear.
“I agree with (Chelsea boss) Enzo Maresca that they deserved to win the game, but they didn’t have to play that well. When they had to move the ball at pace, they did that, and Leicester weren’t able to cope with them. Other than a five or 10-minute spell in the first half, I thought Leicester didn’t offer much at all.
“Look at (Jamie) Vardy there with the forwards. He’s pointing. There’s no point in those three pressing if the midfield are going to sit further back and watch them press because otherwise good players will get the ball, turn and put you under pressure. That’s what happened.
“When Leicester did get the ball back they did that (lump it forward) a lot of the time and then Vardy’s not able to do anything. It’s three or four versus one. What happens there is the ball goes up and then it comes straight back.”
Shearer also picked out the lack of pressure on Marc Cucurella for the second Chelsea goal. That was despite City having plenty of players back.
He added: “The second half was very similar. I know Justin’s down injured, but while they get men behind the ball, I don’t see where the press is. There’s no energy. There’s nobody coming out.
“Cucurella takes three touches, picks his head up, gets his cross into the box, Jackson heads and Fernandez follows it up. It was a disappointing performance from Leicester.”
City icon Gary Lineker took the same view, saying he “wouldn’t disagree” with Shearer’s assessment. And having listened to Foxes boss Steve Cooper discuss refereeing decisions in his post-match interview, the Match of the Day host added: “I’m not sure you can blame the referee for Leicester losing that game.”
Fellow pundit Ashley Williams did not believe the Stephy Mavididi penalty debate was worthy of so much focus from Cooper. He said: “I know what Steve Cooper’s saying, but he’s got to concentrate on his team’s performance a little bit more than those kinds of decisions, for me. The game didn’t change on that decision.”
