It seemed like Gary Lineker could barely face analysing Leicester City on Match of the Day after they slumped to a seventh defeat in a row.

A 2-0 home loss to Fulham, on the back of a 2-0 home loss to Crystal Palace, was played out to groans and boos from Leicester supporters and leaves new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side second bottom in the Premier League, two points behind 17th-placed Wolves having played one game more.

The game itself didn’t get much review from a Leicester perspective, partly because commentator Conor McNamara had perhaps summed it up with his closing line on the highlights: “Leicester look tired, they look down and out, they look in big, big trouble.”

Lineker, having interviewed Fulham manager Marco Silva himself, looked downcast when he turned his attention to his own club.

He said: “Leicester were poor, really poor.”

Danny Murphy, on the pundit’s side of the table, could only agree.

“They were,” he said. “They’ve actually gone four home games without scoring. That hasn’t happened since 1983 when a Mr Gary Lineker was playing.”

At least Lineker had a decent retort to that, saying: “We lost the first seven games of the season but stayed up. I think I scored 23.”

Leicester actually lost the first six games of 1983/84 and eight of the first nine before picking up form going through the winter and 22-goal Lineker helping to secure a 15th-placed finish under Gordon Milne, three points above the drop zone.

This time around, they are now 1/8 to finish in the bottom three and be doomed to the Championship. Southampton are all-but written off at 1/66 while Ipswich Town are 4/6, Wolves are 15/8, Everton are 11/4 and Manchester City, awaiting a verdict on PSR charges, are 12/1.
