Gary Neville admits he is glad Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo signed for Liverpool and not Manchester United as he is not the player they need.

The two Premier League giants had been linked with a move for the 23-year-old for some time. And the winger’s displays for the Netherlands at the World Cup upped the ante in the pursuit of his signature. It seemed as though the Red Devils were in pole position to win the race.

TEAMtalk transfer insider Graeme Bailey recently reported that United were confident of landing their target in the new year.

But he has chosen to sign for Liverpool and will move to Anfield from PSV when the winter window opens.

And Neville feels he is the type of player tailor-made for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“I think it fits the profile of what Liverpool have tried to sign in Mane, Salah and Jota,” he said on Sky Sports.

“That kind of £40m bracket of signing, what Jurgen Klopp said over there we normally get good value out of our signings and improve them and that’s the most important thing, when he works with potential.”

Neville backs United stars to fill Gakpo void

United’s latest transfer failure has led to anger among some of the fans. Many expected Gakpo to be a United player early next year.

However, he will be in the opposition ranks when the two north-west rivals meet.

The Old Trafford outfit were linked with the Dutchman last summer but signed Antony instead.

They have now missed the boat. But Neville feels that Erik ten Hag already has enough talent in that particular position.

“In terms of the Manchester United side of things, I saw him at the World Cup I actually didn’t think Manchester United did need [him], I know a lot of fans have been disappointed,” he added.

“But with Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho, Antony, Jurgen Klopp said himself he’s better off that left side, you can say Martial as well so from that rivalry, I think Liverpool do need him.

“I wasn’t as disappointed as a United fan from watching in the World Cup because I thought he was a similar player to what they had.”

Neville expects Ten Hag to bring in new forward

Manchester United are just one place and one point outside the top four. And that is despite a few months of turmoil regarding Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal legend has now departed the scene and that particular soap opera has ended.

But there is still a piece of the puzzle missing to ensure their top-four challenge lasts until May.

Gakpo may have been prolific his term, with 13 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for PSV. However, Neville is adamant that Ten Hag needs to set his sights on a pure number nine.

“I mean look, you can accumulate players all the time but Manchester United need a centre-forward, he’s not the centre-forward of the style they need,” he continued.

United are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Molineux to take on Wolves.
