Gary Neville and Ian Wright blown away by Liverpool undroppable who has saved FSG millions
Gary Neville and Ian Wright have heaped praise on Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch for his outstanding start to the 2024/2025 season under Arne Slot. The Reds have enjoyed a promising start to the season and sit five points clear of rivals Manchester City at the Premier League summit.
They also top the Champions League standings with four wins from four games. Gravenberch has been one of the players to benefit most from Slot's arrival having started every single one of their top-flight and Champions League matches - and he's already close to matching last term's total of 21 starts.
After joining the club from Bayern Munich last summer, the 22-year-old struggled for regular minutes under Jurgen Klopp with Alexis Mac Allister and Endo ahead of him in the pecking order. That prompted Liverpool to pursue Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer, but a move failed to come to fruition as he opted to remain at the La Liga club.

Instead of returning to the market for an alternative, Slot placed his trust in Gravenberch - and it's a decision both Wright and Neville reckon has paid off for the Dutchman. "Liverpool were getting ready to buy [Martin] Zubimendi, but [Ryan] Gravenberch came in and locked off that position [in midfield]," said Wright on The Overlap's latest Stick to Football podcast.
"How much has he saved Liverpool?" he added. Neville then chimed in.
The former Manchester United captain said: "Gravenberch is a massive surprise with how well he has played at the start of the season [for Liverpool]. I don't think anyone expected him to be as good as he has been, in that position, Curtis Jones has been very good, too."
